The "finger-shaped tip mortices," or finger joints, are a feature of some Finnish Mosin-Nagant stocks, particularly those that were manufactured or refurbished during the war years (pre- or during WWII). This was a common method used by the Finns to splice a new fore-end onto an existing or repaired stock, often to accommodate different barrel lengths or to repair damaged stocks.
