WWI/WWII Winchester 1897 12-gauge pump action, open hammer Trench Gun. 2 3/4” chambered, 20” CYL bore barrel, magasine 5(+1).
All authentic characteristics including:
- US and Flaming Bomb ordinance stamps
- serial# E681165 (WWI production was between E613000 and E705000)
- solid frame, CYL bore
- 1917 pattern bayonet with original sheath
The following details show that the gun was returned to the armoury between the wars and refurbished as follows:
- WWII Winchester 4 row heat shield
- WWII Winchester fluted butt stock
- metal was parkerized
- stocks finished with armoury finish
Stocks display numerous scrapes, teeth marks, scull dents, and defensive nicks from hard use. Two large cracks on fore stock (not affecting proper function). Externally, the metal is scratched or pitted in various places. Internally, the receiver and barrel are clean with a few small scuffs. Butt plate is chipped and cracked. Clearly saw combat in at least two wars. The action cycles smoothly and quickly. Gun remains in fully serviceable condition. Bayonet and sheath are in excellent condition.
First employed in WWI, this is the legendary “trench sweeper” that was used by allied armies to attack enemy trenches and to shoot down grenades. The 1897 was so reliable, it went on to be used in WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam (this particular unit was sold as surplus long after all 4 wars and may have served in all of them).
This exceedingly rare piece of history is offered for sale for $4850 CDN (including 1917 pattern bayonet and sheath)*, shipping with insurance available.
US purchasers can import through FFL dealer at their own cost. A Canadian dealer (a necessary intermediary in order to export a firearm) will charge approximately $250 USD to the FFL dealer of your choice. Your FFL dealer will likely have charges for importing for you.
